Tea lights, especially those which are rechargeable, are some of my wife’s favourite accent pieces; at last count we had at least twenty-four of them scattered about the house. We have pretty much phased out the old style lights which required button cells in favour of these newer models which are more convenient and don’t require constant trips to the local dollar store for replacement batteries. The twelve tea lights in this set are in almost constant use, lighting nooks and crannies about our house! They have a “flame” on the top of the wick which contains the LED light source rather than our “old school” units where the light is located inside the candle itself. Even better, however, is the fact that the brightness of the candles can be controlled and they can be set to automatically turn off after 4 or 6 hours (it should be noted that the timer operates on a twenty-four hour cycle; if set to four hours, the units will come on during the same four hour period the following day). After the switch on the bottom of the candle has been turned to on, all functions are controlled by a small remote. In addition to the timer and brightness functions previously mentioned, you are able to control the manner in which the candles flicker (slowly, fast, steady, or dimming until almost out then slowly returning to regular brightness). The remote’s range is supposedly five metres although, in our experience, at that distance performance is spotty.Recharging the candles is straight forward although, as is to be expected, requires a fair bit of space. The set comes with two multi-line “Medusa” chargers; powered by a standard USB port, each charger has six 8” plugs which serve to recharge the candles. When plugged into the charger, a red light inside the candle will illuminate and remain on until the unit is fully charged. With two chargers and a total of twelve plugs, you are, of course, able to charge as many or as few of the units as you need to do at one time. Charging time is two to three hours with operating time being highly dependent on which brightness level you select (according to the product page, the resulting charge can last over forty hours on the brightest setting). The manual states that the candles should not be charged for more than four hours. These candles have been a nice addition to our household. We don’t use real candles when the grandkids are visiting so this is a great, safe substitute. There is no smoky smell and no wax to clean up. The candles do a good job of creating the illusion that they are really burning! I appreciate the fact that I can use the remote to control candles placed in awkward locations rather than fetching a chair to climb on to turn them on. The fact that they are so easily recharged is also a real bonus; they are really very convenient. Highly recommended.
